I’ve always had a soft spot for the Coast Guard, because their uniforms reminded me of the Good Humor Man. The Good Humor Man was like a god to us kids back in the mid-20th century, more meaningful to us than even Jesus. Jesus, with that sickly sweet smile of his, was like that uncle whose lap you were never comfortable sitting on. The Good Humor Man got right down to business: he gave you ice cream. When he was young, my father was a Good Humor Man. The recounting of this fact taught us kids the meaning of “irony”.
