You're right! It's the famed Globes of Despair, standing on the site of the former Atheists' Market, which was demolished during the Know-Nothing Riots of 1886. The Globes were erected two years later by a disconsolate veterinarian, Jamison Peggart, after losing his left knee in a veterinarian accident. The Globes have become the scene of a beloved ritual in which jilted lovers climb their pole, kiss a globe, and are carried off to jail, where they are repeatedly gang-raped by inmates.
