IS IT JUST ME....

...or does anyone else find this billboard concept mildly unsettling? Powhatan, as we all know, was Pocahontas' dad, and after John Smith took off, engaged in bloody battles with the colonists for many years. He tried to hold together various confederacies of tribes as he was chased further and further inland, until he died of a fever. As far as I can see, he was doing everything in his power to keep this nation from being born, and there's something unpleasant about co-opting his name to add a little spice to the story. What if, for example, that guy's t-shirt said, "Thank you, slaves"? Maybe I'm more sensitive to this than is absolutely required, and, if so, it's because this concept is typical of the sloppy thinking done by ad guys who mistake lazy cleverness for creativity. Until recently, I was one of their number, so I'm not making any claims to be higher in the food chain. It's just that nobody seems to really think any more. It's all fleeting impressions and sound bites and quick cuts and spin doctoring and titillation. There's no quiet center to things. We're like an overcrowded cage of monkeys, all flinging poop at each other. Why, it's just---*sputter* ---- spark ----

Okay, I'm fine now. Wonder what's on "Access Hollywood"....
